What is Policy.Lk

As a group of average Sri Lankans who can read and think, there is a set of questions that pop up every time things don’t appear to be working right in the government.

Are things really as bad as all the pundits describe? Do we as a country have no hope? Do we need a “system change” and only then will we be able to see peace and prosperity? Is overhauling Diyawannawa our only way out?

To be honest we are neither psychics and definitely not pundits. However, one thing we do agree on is that as much as things may not seem to work out, there are a million things that are working well in this country. What if, rather than waiting for that fateful day when the whole system is suddenly revamped and we will be at the gates of the promised land, there may be things we can do, as individuals and as a community to change things for the better.

Out of that possible list of items, we at policy.lk are trying to see if there are ways in which we can make small and large changes leveraging the most important resource we have in this country: YOU.

So… What is Policy.Lk?

Policy.Lk is an attempt to provide the general public of Sri Lanka with the necessary tools to create long term sustainable policy. We hope to provide a platform to generate policy ideas through discussion and debate, with the expectation to further these community generated policies by involving domain experts and finally to implement them by assisting politicians and state entities.

But before all of that, we need to get a better understanding of what is happening currently and how others have solved them. To do that we need you to join us, to be a part of the discussion and help form and implement better policy.

So tell us what you feel and let’s start the dialogue!

How we work

We aim to create a platform to connect people and thereby make it easier for people with common interests to get in touch to generate solutions to existing problems or scenarios. The stages to generating community based policies through this approach is as follows:

  • Identify and bring to light a problem which needs review through people who have understood or experienced this at ground level.

  • Create a platform to connect these people interested in a particular issue or area with experts in that area to brainstorm, discuss and debate on said issue.

  • Thereafter, generate sustainable solutions to combat or mitigate the issue.

  • This community generated solution can then be taken to the awareness of authorities capable of execution.

How can you get involved

First and foremost, we need to identify pressing issues to the people of Sri Lanka in the current context. For this we need your input and experience as well as those of your friends to voice out anything and everything that you believe needs to be changed to the better in Sri Lanka.

If you are a specialist in a specific area, please browse through our topics under discussion and help make each debate a more informative and accurate one. Help us make this platform an educated democracy by sharing expert knowledge on each issue and thereby to generate well informed sustainable solutions.

In our blog posts, you can also help us improve and share success stories on what is going ‘right’ in this country or in the world by which we may learn through experiences of others and implement for the betterment of Sri Lanka.

You can also help us create traction by increasing engagement on specific issues to take it to the attention of the masses and hopefully also to the public officials in charge.

We hope to create an informed society in Sri Lanka, of both the issues and possible solutions and promote community engagement in the making of policy in Sri Lanka.
